Background: Robert has been a key member
of the District Six Museum band, and has also contributed
significantly to a museum-led music research programme which
focused on his work as a pennywhistler of note.
The
District
Six Museum seeks to stimulate the recovery and development
of different forms of knowledge in Cape Town and other parts
of South Africa, particularly knowledge located in communities
who have experienced land dispossession and accompanying cultural
annihilation. The museum recognises the profound importance
that music and other forms of cultural expression have played
in articulating the aspirations of oppressed and dispossessed
people in South Africa. The museum's work with the recovery
of the musical heritage of Cape Town is integral to its involvement
with the larger process of redress and healing now occurring
in the urban diasporic communities on the Cape Flats and beyond.
The museum aims to develop an archival knowledge base of musical
styles from the Western Cape and to understand its historical
impact on the Southern African region, aiming to collect music
from areas which fed the musical culture of the Cape including
remnants of indigenous musical traditions. Areas of influence
include Europe, North America, Indonesia, Malaysia, India
and, of course, continental Africa.
This
work started in 1997 with the establishment of the District
Six Museum Sound Archive
This
event is supported by the City of Cape Town and LUNCH communications. |
